Our rainforests are a precious resource that needs protection and reforestation.  Due to the damage done by climate changes and human expansion we are loosing valuable forest land at an alarming rate.  Millions of people around the world depend on these forests to provide food, shelter and employment.  Provendus is a company that seeks to not only protect these delicate environments by decreasing green house gasses but to reforest the land, provide necessary food and stimulate economic growth in some of the poorest nations in the world.

The Breadfruit tree is a simple, hardy and productive tree which produces useful products from every portion of the tree.  Just one tree produces an average of 150 fruits weighing between 1-13 pounds which can help to feed hundreds of people.  The fruit is a staple crop that is high in many vitamins and minerals as well as carbohydrates which are an excellent source of energy. Breadfruit protects the body against heart disease and heart attacks because it is also a rich source of fibre.

Additionally, the fibre found in breadfruit can help those with diabetes to control the disease. Latex, which comes from the leaves, makes a strong adhesive used traditionally as boat caulk.  The leaves also make excellent feed for livestock and horses.  Flexible yet strong the trunk of the tree is a colourful wood that is termite resistant and perfect for furniture making.  This tree even has a multitude of medicinal purposes said to help treat such ailments as asthma, toothaches and skin rashes.
